What's An Error Fare And How Does It Work?
This morning, a rare "Error Fare" populated from locations all across the United States to New Zealand! Prices were found as low as $242RT! A normal fare to Australia or New Zealand starts around $800 and goes up to $1300 depending on origin and dates. As you can see, this is huge savings.
Error fares are most common when airlines codeshare. Sometimes it's a system error and you only end up paying taxes and fuel surcharges. Sometimes the errors are human in nature. The key to booking these fare deals is to book it right now and figure the rest out. Generally, you have 24 hours to cancel a flight booking with no penalty.
The most important thing to understand is that the airline does not have to honor these fares. They have the right to cancel them and refund you. It's imperative that you don't make any other arrangements such as hotels, rental cars and shuttles until the airline has ticketed you. Even then, it's good to give the airlines a 72-hour buffer after booking a deal this cheap.
A lot of aggregate sites can take 24-hours to ticket a booking even after it's been confirmed. We tried through two different sites to get this deal today and got e-mails like this from both sites after booking.
Obviously, when a glitch fare has gone out, it's important that you do not contact the airline directly over the phone or via their website. Just book it and figure it out when the ticket processes!
